SnowPro Update: Bobby Murphy, NSAA Enviro & Heated Chairs
PSIA-AASI’s own Bobby Murphy has been named the new director of the Vail Snowsports School, replacing Pete Sonntag who has moved to Heavenly as VP and general manager. Bobby brings more than 20 years of ski industry experience to Vail, and as a current, two-term member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) Alpine Team, is recognized as one of the most accomplished snowsports professionals in the country.
In a press release, Vail’s Chris Jarnot stated, “The entire Vail Mountain leadership team is excited to welcome Bobby to Vail and believe his experience, perspective, attitude, and leadership will continue the Vail Snowsports School’s progression as the world’s largest and premier ski and snowboard school.”
In addition to being a PSIA Alpine Team Member, Bobby is a technical reviewer for 32 Degrees: The Journal of Professional Snowsports Instruction, and has been a featured expert ski instructor in SKI Magazine.
NSAA Releases Annual Sustainable Slopes Report
Lakewood, Colo. (PSIA-AASI) - The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has released its 10th Sustainable Slopes Annual Report detailing the ski industry’s progress in implementing the principles of its Environmental Charter during the 2009-10 season.
Based on a survey of member resorts, the report highlights resorts’ progress in conserving energy and water, reducing solid waste, educating employees and guests, and partnering with communities. More than 190 resorts endorse the Environmental Charter, representing about 75 percent of the ski industry by visits.
A copy of the 75-page 2010 Sustainable Slopes Annual Report is available in the Sustainable Slopes section of NSAA’s website under the Environment menu at http://www.nsaa.org.
Canyons Installs Heated Chair
Park City, Utah (PSIA-AASI) - Not sure if this means you can start skiing in your shorts even earlier in the season, but The Canyons Resort has installed North America’s first heated chair. According to the folks at The Canyons, “The Orange Bubble enclosed quad lift is like riding up inside a ski goggle. It also has heated seats.”
Warm or not, the new lift increases the uphill capacity from the base by 47 percent, and it whisks skiers to the top in just nine minutes. On a cold day, you may actually find yourself wishing that it was a slower chair.
