GWAP 2010: Crested Butte

The Go With a Pro 2010 filming season just concluded on the slopes of Crested Butte, Colo. We joined PSIA Alpine Team member (and snowsports school/skier services director) Nick Herrin, and the Matlock family, consisting of PSIA Nordic Team member Ross Matlock, former PSIA Alpine Team member Jill Matlock, and little rippers Kai and Jamis, for a few days of shredding the gnar on some of the state’s steepest terrain.

Our visit began with Nick, who showed us around Mt. Crested Butte and provided a fireside chat for the camera in one of the base area’s warm and welcoming settings. After Nick revealed his secrets of ski success, we followed him down the hill to CB South, where we were treated to a jiaozi (Chinese pot sticker) party, courtesy of Nick’s lovely fiancé, Kristina, and future in-laws.

Fortunately, we didn’t have to chase Nick down any steeps until the next day, lest we would have lost our pot stickers in an effort to keep up. So it was 12 hours of digestion later when we reconvened at the Silver Queen lift for a little on-snow action. You’ll have to see the show for the full experience, but we can assure you that it was not gentle, slow, or easy.

We mistakenly expected a reprieve from the demands of CB’s most extreme terrain when we joined Ross and Jill, and their kids, Kai and Jamis, for some family ski action. Thinking that the kid program might be a little more on the mellow side, we were amazed to see the Matlocks junior, just five and eight years old, take to the slopes with the same ease and skill of their parents. And really, how could we have expected any less? Both boys demonstrated an uncanny understanding of snowsports in their interviews the previous night, and that, combined with their natural abilities and parentage, made for quite a performance on the snow.
