About Rob

Rob was on the PSIA Alpine Team from 1996 to 2004, and this is his second term as alpine team coach. His teaching career began in 1983 at Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin, where he was a staff trainer and USSA Masters race coach. In 1987, he moved to Utah’s Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, where he has been ever since. Teaching skiing and positions as children’s school supervisor, training coordinator, and private lessons manager have lead to Rob’s current job as the assistant director for personnel and coordinator for resort guest services. Summers are for biking and golf; and, having recently sold all of his windsurfing gear, Rob is waiting for 2-year-old daughter, Amelia, to take up kite surfing.

Vital Stats

Hometown: Rockford Illinois

Resort: Snowbird

Sponsors:
Volkl, Tecnica, Marker, Smith, Swany, Leki

Favorite run: Thunder Bowl, Snowbird

Favorite on-mountain restaurant:
Boyne Highlands Lodge, Boyne Highlands

Favorite travel destination: Italy – Cinqua Terra/Tuscany

Ski day breakfast: Coffee, and anything quick. Usually Cherios and fruit.

On-mountain snack: Lemon Luna bars (for my feminine side)

Playlist: Mostly Old Stuff – Allman Bros., Buffett, John Hiatt, Martin Sexton.

Skis on: Volkl AC fiddy – it’s unreal with the Marker WideRide binding; The Mantra for a fat ski (which isn’t really that fat anymore); and I still love slalom skis.

Just read: The new Children’s Instruction Manual – nice job. Last real book was The Grapes of Wrath (yes it was recently – I never had to read it in school and felt like I missed out).

Coolest place I've ever been: Southern Utah desert – there is no place on earth like it, so I won’t try to describe it.

Top three off-snow activities:
1) Biking, preferably mountain biking, but I’m getting into road riding
2) Working on my house – you said top three not favorite
3) Golf, but I rarely have the time

PSIA-AASI makes me . . . want to ski

First ski outfit: Blue jeans, old Roffe jacket with the colored stripes down the sleeves, one of those “chicken hats” with the three points that said Wilmot Mtn. on it, and some old, old, Cebe goggles with a bright yellow lens.

The best thing about coaching the PSIA Alpine Team: Traveling to the divisions. I’ve spent a lot of days in the Northwest, and Central – I still would like to make it to the Eastern Division.
