Bill Bowness Honored at Ski Spectacular
The Jim Winthers award is presented annually to a person who has positively impacted the lives of individuals with disabilities, those associated with adapted sport, as well as members of the surrounding community. Bowness’s recognition honors his commitment to excellence in all that he does. Winthers was the founder of DS/USA (formerly the National Handicapped Sports and Recreation Association) and taught many people how to ski.

Beth Fox and Bill Demby presented the award, and Fox spoke to Bowness’s contributions and positive impact: “Bill personifies those traits through his quiet but effective presence in the disabled and able-bodied communities. He puts forth a non-intimidating challenge to people to listen to others, consider new possibilities, and be a better human being.”
When asked how he felt about the honor, Bowness explained how touched, honored, and surprised he was. “I was shocked! I’m honored and just can’t believe that I received an award for my work in adaptive snowsports. I didn’t really do anything spectacular . . . It’s easy when you do what you love!”
