Instructors Excel at Aspen World Synchro Championships
The Aspen World Synchro Championships were held April 8 on Aspen Mountain, with dozens of instructors from around the world competing in the synchronized ski competition. According Jenny Williams, a board member of the Aspen Divas Team, the competition is, “The perfect way to close the winter season in the northern hemisphere. The championships expose international ski instructors to their elite peers, forcing them to perform to the highest technical level as a team.”
Spectators filled the deck at Bonnies Restaurant to watch the athletes compete on the same slope that was used for demonstrations at the 1968 Aspen Interski. The 50th anniversary of that landmark event was celebrated on the mountain and at a special event in town the evening of the April 7.
Williams said that most of the Synchro Championships teams consist of professional ski instructors from all over the world, including the U.S., Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, Austria, and Czech Republic. “As the event is judged on individual bumps and race criteria, as well as the team score for the day of synchronized skiing, it can be any team’s event,” Williams said. “To compete against top instructors from around the globe is inspiring. Lifelong friendships are made here.”
