Regardless of your teaching discipline or lesson specialty, you can start the 2018-19 season with a brand-new educational resource that helps you create the ultimate learning environment. PSIA-AASI’s Teaching Snowsports Manual is full of practical teaching applications, focusing on the Learning Connection framework of people skills, teaching skills, and technical skills that make a well-balanced instructor.
The manual covers communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, effective teaching, and how people learn; as well as a practical, multi-discipline approach to presenting technical material. In addition, specific chapters are devoted to managing risk, sports psychology, physical fitness and conditioning, service relationships, and professional development.
“Teaching Snowsports beautifully complements the timeless Core Concepts for Snowsports Instructors, as it brings to life many of the models and concepts instructors use daily,” said PSIA-AASI Director of Education Dave Schuiling. “It helps instructors develop the interpersonal skills that ignite learning, while also enhancing the teaching skills that bring technical knowledge to life.”
Lead authors Ellen Post Foster and Rob Sogard called upon several contributing authors to focus on specific chapters and worked with a large group of reviewers to assure technical accuracy of the content.
This new publication is also a must-have education manual and professional development resource guide for schools to build their instructor training curriculum. “It embodies ideals for key job skills that ski and ride schools value in ‘creating lifelong adventures through education’ with their guests,” said Schuiling.
Because of its well-rounded approach to the learning environment, this new resource will be highlighted during PSIA-AASI’s indoor lectures and on-snow workshops at Interski 2019, which will be held in Pamporovo, Bulgaria, next March. “At Interski 2015 in Ushuaia, Argentina, we posed the question ‘What is great teaching?’ to our peers from around the snowsports education world,” said Schuiling. “The Teaching Snowsports Manual is our answer to that question. We’re excited to share it with everyone!”
