About the NSCD:
The National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) enables the human spirit through therapeutic recreation and sport. Each year more than 4,000 children and adults with disabilities participate in our programs to improve the quality of their lives. With specially trained staff, a custom adaptive equipment lab and over 1,200 volunteers, the NSCD provides therapeutic recreation through a variety of winter and summer sports and activities to individuals with almost any physical, cognitive, emotional and/or behavioral diagnosis. Year-round programming is based out of Winter Park Resort and Empower Field at Mile High.

Position Overview:
Under the supervisor of the Program Supervisors and Program Coordinators, the Instructor teaches skiing and/or snowboarding lessons as well as other winter activities to individuals with disabilities. This seasonal winter position includes instruction in daily private lessons, group lessons, and custom programming. Instructors may determine usage of adaptive equipment such as sit skis, mono skis and outriggers.

Job Duties:

  • Instructs individual or group lessons using appropriate teaching progressions and exercises.
  • Performs student assessments and determines adaptive equipment and modifications.
  • Selects appropriate teaching system and sets goals and plans lesson according to therapeutic recreation concepts.
  • Documents student progress, maintains accurate records and makes recommendations for future lessons.
  • Assists with coordination and operation of weekly programs.
  • Participates in mentorship program for instructors and volunteers.
  • Attends NSCD training sessions.
  • Assists with NSCD volunteer and special events.
  • Actively participates with NSCD fundraising efforts.
  • Follows consistently safety procedures and utilizes appropriate safety equipment.
  • Creates and maintains a friendly, congenial and helpful attitude while effectively dealing with guests and other employees.

Other duties may be assigned

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum Level 7 skiing ability required.
  • Current First Aid and CPR required within one month of hire.
  • Minimum one year experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Experience teaching levels 1-5 alpine skiing or snowboarding preferred.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.
  • College degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, or related field preferred.
  • Credentialed through PSIA, AMGA, USSA or related relevant agency preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to work a majority of the time outside at high altitude in varying conditions including uneven and slick terrain and unpredictable weather and situations.
  • Physically able to assist participants with adaptive recreation equipment, position adjustments, transfers, and movement during activities
  • Able to lift a minimum of 75 lbs. with assistance.
  • Dexterity, auditory and visual acuity to operate computers and phones or mobile devices.
  • Auditory and visual acuity to interact with guests, students, clients on a daily basis
  • Able to successfully manage multiple, high priority tasks in a fast-paced and often times crowded and noisy environment.
  • Possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and meet criteria to drive company vehicles including 16 passenger vans and vehicles with large towing capacity, snowmobiles, surface and aerial lifts.

Work Schedule:

  • This position supports seven day a week operations and weekend and holiday work shifts are required. Schedules and start locations are based off business need.

Salary: Hourly rate is $15 per hour
