Course Name: History of Skiing - On Snow
Time: 1 Day (6 credits)

Explore the interaction of factors that influenced the development of skiing, ski technique, and ski instruction. Experience and practice skiing techniques and skills required to use early equipment as compared to traditional and contemporary ski techniques. It is recommended, not required, participants complete the e-Learning History of Snowsports prior to the on-snow course.
Specific activities will vary depending on the group, environmental conditions, and access to equipment; however, they will typically include:
• Experimenting with the earliest Nordic and Alpine techniques (using Nordic gear if possible.)
• Understanding the evolution to modern Alpine techniques and tactics.
• Reviewing the evolution of the ATS (American Teaching System) since the 60's, including:
o Finished forms
o Stepping Stones
• Reviewing the principles of contemporary Alpine skiing and understanding what has changed, including:
o Skills Concept
o Fundamental Movements
o Ski Performance
o Movement Analysis
• Exploring the value of historical techniques
o How have they impacted the current generation of skiers?
o How can we use this historical perspective to improve our lessons for new skiers, experienced skiers, and skiers who may demonstrate more traditional movement patterns?
